Bairds Tapir

Baird's TapirImage by Andy Tinkham via FlickrThis is one of Costa Rica's most popular animals. It happens to be a flagship species of Costa Rica. There are many interesting facts about the Bairds Tapir (Danta) so I wanted to make a list. This animal is called the Rhino of Central America. Hope you enjoy:

  • Life Span is 30 Years
  • 4 Species exist (Bairds Tapir in Central America)
  • Found in Every Continent except Antarctic; evidence of Super Continent Gondwanaland
  • Species unchanged for millions of years
  • Each toe has it's own separate hoof
  • Nose and Upper lip combined into a flexible snout like an elephants trunk
  • Travels alone
  • Uses flexible nose to explore a circle of ground 1 foot in diameter w/o having to move it's head
  • They love the water and can use their snout as a snorkel

Encore by Arenal

Arenal Volcano Costa Rica
Once again I was treated to a show by the most active volcano on the planet, Volcan Arenal. In the center of the country on a great plain, Vulcan Arenal rises up with perfect symmetry. All day long Arenal was showing a stream of smoke out one of its two vents. Then at five o'clock in the morning it showed us some fire and kicked out a few rocks. I should say that they looked like rocks from below but they are realy boulders the size of a SUV. They are usually red and give off a trail of smoke and dust as they roll downhill.

Volcan Arenal is always changing. It has two vents up top now, where previously there was only one. The volcanic activity has blown another hole in the top. Arenal is also getting taller. Because of its activity, it is three hundred feet taller than it was fifty years ago. It is quite a show.

Arenal Volcano Tossing Lava Down South Side

This is some cool news. Anytime a volcano changes its daily routine in Costa Rica it is like a major sporting event happening in the States. If you know anything about Costa Rica then you have probably heard of the Arenal Volcano which is located in the north of the country and has been one of the most active volcanos on the planet since the 60's. The that flows down the side puts on a show that tourist and locals are amazed by. Just early this week the volcano has been really making some big explosions and it turns out the lava is now falling on the south side of the volcano. I had the chance to call a family that lives on the south side of the volcano and get their comments. They told me that they were up at 2am watching the volcano because they heard a big explosion. They then send they noticed large boulders bouncing down the side of the volcano. This is a family that has lived in the Arenal area for generations. They said it was some of the largest lava flow they have seen in many years. Not only was it a show for the locals but the tourist that are visiting the Arenal area had a bonus for their trip having the chance to see such heavy lava flow.
